MANY JOURNEYS. ONE HOPE.
Yesterday, the Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc. (LCII) held its first Breast Cancer Awareness Walk across the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, bringing people together in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer.
More than a walk, it was a celebration of courage, resilience, and hope. We honoured breast cancer survivors and created a space for them to share their journeys. Through their stories, we were reminded of the strength it takes to face a diagnosis, endure treatment, and navigate the challenges of recovery and survivorship. We recognize that behind every survivor is a unique story of pain, sacrifice, courage, and triumph.
Their voices remind us that the journey does not end when treatment ends. Survivors need continued support, compassion, and care long after their diagnosis. In recognition of World Mental Health Day, Psychologist Sheneva Jacobs spoke about the importance of mental health and coping mechanisms.
We also recognize that there is still much work to be done to raise awareness and help our communities understand the importance of early detection and regular screening.
Our heartfelt gratitude to Massy Foundation Massy Distribution Guyana Inc.. for its support of this event, SheShines Team and Oxford Medical Team for participating in the walk, to our dedicated Lotus members and volunteers, and to every individual who came out to walk with us and support this important cause. Your presence helped amplify our message and strengthen our commitment to cancer awareness in Guyana.
But our work does not end with the walk.
Throughout October, Lotus continues to encourage early detection through our free mammogram initiative, alongside our monthly medical outreaches focused on screening, awareness, and prevention of the three leading cancers affecting our communities: prostate, breast, and cervical cancers.
We know that the road ahead is long, and there is much more to be done. However, we remain committed to playing our part in strengthening cancer prevention, screening, care, and patient support across Guyana.
Together, we can raise awareness, encourage early screening, support survivors, and help save lives.
